Snubbed

"Where in South Africa are you from?"
"Pietermaritzburg."
"I'm from Cape Town."
"Oh," she said. "Are you."

And turned away.

  1. I bet this happened in London. This is one thing I don't miss about living down south. Northerners are so much more friendly.

  2. Word! Love the Lancastrians. (That's an order.)

It sounds like my baked-bean experience in Rosebank, Cape Town:

Pretty Pre-Raphaelite Brunette: *chat, chat, chat* in the tinned goods aisle of a supermarket.
Me: *blah blah blah* (My, what a friendly girl.)
PP-RB: *suddenly looks alarmed* 'You're not from here, are you?'
Me: No, I'm from Joburg. I'm here on holiday.
PP-RB: *spins on heel and walks away*.
Me: 'Huh?' (My, what a friendly, CRACKERS girl.)

That was before I knew that CT types don't like the Vaalies in their space. December. I understand.

  3. Thing is, even the Londoners around me agreed that she was bonkers. And really, those Natallers are odd, but not that odd. I guess my efforts at small talk were *just that dull*. Fair enough.
