A maze of twisty little media, all the same

There's something Iraqi in the air, don't you think? We have Jarhead* in the cinema. We had a week of Iraq documentaries on Channel 4 (or was it E4 or More4? Whatever...). We have Raider Nation on Sky News** this weekend.

And then there's this.

Which is really exceptionally funny.
_____
* For the record: a horrible, horrible, horrible movie. I mean, it's very good. But completely fucking horrible. Put me right off marines, men, Americans and the human race. (In no particular order.)
** Which you absolutely must watch, if for no other reason than that Beloved was working on it for 14 days straight, 10-15 hours per day, and I never saw him, and luckily it's turned out quite good.

Don't suppose Raider Nation will be available on the Yank side of the open whale tank?

And what, On. Earth. is this wv string supposed to represent? Early Sumerian script? I recognize one e, maybe a j.
*fetches salad for that order of crab*

Open whale tank. Heh.

No, you're excused from Beloved support duty on geographical grounds. Pity really, it makes a great companion piece to Jarhead. (The movie: marines, Iraq, 1990, fiction. The doccie: marines, Iraq, 2005, fact. Some very similar issues are addressed.)

bwwhcwsb: whale-speak for "so long cruel world".

Not-so-fictional, actually. The movie. It's based on the book of the same name, which resides in the military history/memoir section of any book repository. And unlike many movies, it is very true to its source material. One man's very screwed up view of things, for sure. But someone I know, who was there, didn't have much to say about the movie being inaccurate, only that it brought back memories.

Good point. The difference then is more objective (sort of) vs subjective than fact vs fiction. And more about painting a picture than telling a story. Ooh, this is getting increasingly blurry.

Dang. That was some funny political satire. If only it weren't so truthful....cuz then we have to flinch and remember how many people voted for him. Ouch.

Yeah, funny until you realise how eerily true it is.

Well, I'm over the whole "Bush is depressing" thing, cos if you think about that you just have to be miserable all the time. I'm all about the laughing and pointing, now.

I have not seen (and probably won't see) Jarhead. I just wanted to comment on how that was one of the finest movie reviews I've seen.

Why thank you, Omar. I used to do this professionally you know. Not that I would have been allowed to get away with anything *quite* so pithy in print...
